Approaches

Relationship counselling

Relationship counselling enables the parties in a relationship to recognise repeating patterns of distress and to understand and manage troublesome differences that they are experiencing. The relationship involved may be between, for example, members of a family (see also family therapy) or a couple, or work colleagues.

Family Counselling

Family therapy, also known as systemic therapy, is an approach that works with families and those in close relationships, regardless of whether they are blood related or not, to foster change. Systemic therapists have a view that difficulties do not arise within individuals but in the relationships, interactions and the language that develop between individuals. In understanding difficulties, systemic therapists explore the connections between the beliefs and behaviours within families.

Psychodynamic approach

This approach stresses the importance of the unconscious and past experience in shaping current behaviour. The client is encouraged to talk about childhood relationships with parents and other significant people and the therapist focuses on the client/therapist relationship (the dynamics). Family therapists help family members find constructive ways to help each other. They work in ways that acknowledge the contexts of people's families and other relationships, sharing and respecting individuals' different perspectives, beliefs, views and stories, and exploring possible ways forward.
